The bumpy road to improve maternal mortality [05-02-2010]
Nepal is very close to achieving the maternal health goal, but there is a budget gap to put the commitments fully into action. The government is committed to increasing health sector budget gradually and allocate at least 7 per cent of the national budget by 2008-09. The total budget in the health sector increased from Rs 14.9 billion in 2008-09 to Rs 17.8 billion in 2009-10. As yet, the allocation for the health sector reached only 6.3 per cent of the national budget.
Empowering the socially excluded….. [05-02-2010]

By assisting the ‘Biswokarmas’, MEDEP has empowered the ‘excluded community’ to work as independent entrepreneurs. Traditionally they had been making items based on demand of upper castes in exchange for 3-4 kgs of rice person per year- a practice known as baali.

Discharge and rehabilitation continues……….  New!
UNDP and its partners in the UNCT have been providing technical and logistical support to the discharge process that began on 7 January 2010 in the Main Cantonment Site 2 (MCS 2), Maoist Army cantonment in Sindhuli district, southeast of Nepal’s capital Kathmandu.

From military to civilian life – first group of minors discharged from Maoist army in Nepal  
These young people were among 4,008 individuals - including some 500 below 18 years old - due to be released over the next 40 days. The rehabilitation process will now give these young people the opportunity to gain new skills - returning to school or learning a trade - provided by the Government of Nepal with the support of the United Nations.

UN, GoN and UCPN-M sign Action Plan for discharge of minors
The discharged individuals will have access to a range of rehabilitation options which have been developed by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP), in consultation with the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction and UCPN-M.
Financing for these packages will be provided from the UN Peace Fund for Nepal (UNPFN), which is supported by the Governments of Norway, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Canada and the UN Peace Building Fund.

United Nations Millennium Campaign (UNMC) is supporting the country to develop a fundamental framework so that people’s right to employment is realized. To achieve that, UNMC is working with the Constituent Assembly members by focusing on incorporation of economic, cultural, social rights into the new Constitution.
