Allo– A flourishing enterprise for rural entrepreneurs [04-03-2010]
With modern textiles replacing the traditional natural fabrics, this age old practice was on the verge of extinction. However, today many women are pursuing this enterprise after the UNDP Micro-enterprise Development Programme (MEDEP) identified Allo as one of the potential raw material for starting an enterprise in 1999.

By assisting the 'Biswokarmas', MEDEP has empowered the 'excluded community' to work as independent entrepreneurs. Traditionally they had been making items based on demand of upper castes in exchange for 3-4 kgs of rice person per year- a practice known as baali.

Women are socially, politically and economically backward in the Asia-Pacific region, progress remains especially slow in South Asia  
Launching the report, Power, Voice and Rights: A Turning Point for Gender Equality in Asia and the Pacific, Hon’ble Binda Pandey, Chairperson of the Fundamental Rights and Directive Principles Committee of the Constituent Assembly said, “Nepal has already made its way towards passing the bill on domestic violence in the legislative parliament which is a big leap in the right direction. Also the 33 per cent representation of women in the Constituent Assembly is noteworthy progress. However the big challenge of turning the Laws, Acts and Policies into implementation and practice requires change in attitude of all women and men in the country”.

2,394 young men and women discharged from Maoist army   
In all, 2,394 young men and women who joined the Maoist army as minors, and late recruits were discharged in seven cantonments across Nepal in the past month. UNDP and its partners in the UNCT provided technical and logistical support to the discharge process.

Target of reducing poverty likely to be met ………….
According to the draft report, Nepal is likely to meet the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 1 of reducing poverty to 21 percent of the population by 2015 as it had already brought down the figure to 25 percent by 2008, with a decline rate of 1 percent annually. In 2005, the population below the poverty line was 31 percent.

The Regional Initiative (Regional Centre Bangkok) conducted a pilot assessment on ‘Communication for Empowerment (C4E) of Indigenous Peoples in Nepal.’ The intended outcome of this information and communication assessment was to identify key challenges and opportunities for interventions to empower the Indigenous Peoples through better access to information and skills to engage with the media.
